This post will focus primarily on car camping gear. Whenever we go camping with a family that’s never been camping, the number one question is often, “What do I need to bring?”
Over the years, I’ve been making notes of things I take, things I wish I had, and things I’ve forgotten. I suggest you do the same when you start your adventures. I will categorize and itemize all the necessary and nice-to-have gear to optimize your next adventure!
Safety
- Portable first aid kit
- First aid kit that lives in your car
- Emergency blankets (space blankets)
- Snake bite kit (especially in California)
- Medications that you take regularly
- Emergency medication such as IBPRUFIN
- Knives (multi-tools) and pocket knives
- Headlamps and handheld flashlights
- Pepper spray for unwanted visitors
- Sunscreen
- Vitamins
Clothing
- Hiking pants (I typically wear hiking pants the entire camping trip)
- PJs for kids and adults
- Moisture wicking shirts
- Wool shirts (Mid Layer)
- Base Layer
- Jacket (waterproof if possible)
- Wool beanie
- Hat and Bandana
- Gators
- Gloves
- Hand/feet warmers
- Hiking socks (wool is optimal)
- Hiking boots
- Back up shoes

Roam and Board
- Rake (to remove rocks under the tent)

- Sleeping pad (per individual)
- Sleeping bag (per individual)

- Canopy for those hot summer days
- Extra trash bag for dirty clothes
- Extra clothes in case of a wet accident
Comfort and Cooking
- Foldable tables (for food prep)
- Cook wear (Pots, Pans, Etc..)
- This heavily depends on the type of food you will be prepping at camp
- Tongs
- Stove and Gas
- Grill (for cooking meets on top of an open fire)
- Utensils (Knives, Forks, and Spoons)
- Foil and zip lock bags for storage
- Paper towels
- Trash bags
- Fridge to store food (cooler or plug in)
Food
- Coffee!!!
- Breakfast (eggs, bacon, etc…)
- Lunch (tuna or cold meats)
- Dinner
- Utenciles / bowls / cups / etc..
- Water (bring more than you think you need)
- I have calculated 1.5 gallons for a family of four
- Used for cooking, coffee, tea, lite cleaning
- Juices and Gatorade
- Oils and seasoning
- Snacks (Chips, Chocolate, Etc..)
- Adult beverage
- Paper towels (possibly the most underrated camp item)
Electronics
- Camera equipment
- Gopro / DSLR / Drones

- Headphones for downtime listening
- Make sure to download podcasts/books before your trip
- Laptop / iPad / Tablets for entertainment
- Extra batteries for emergency
- Ham Radio for emergency comms
- GPS Phone if you have one (Garmin)

- Power banks for recharging mobile devices
